INFORMATION ABOUT STEPHENS COUNTY

  • Stephens County is rectangular about 33 miles from east to west and 27 miles north to south.
  • Total area is 571,520 acres and 893 square miles
  • Population of Stephens County averages around 43,000, Duncan is the County seat with population of 23,000
  • Of the 571,520 acres, 419,923 is in actual farm and ranch use
  • There are 1400 farms in the county with and average size of 309 acres
  • Several larger ranches exist with sizes from 5,000 acres to 25,000 acres
  • Annual rainfall historically 36-38 inches/year
  • Stephens County Plants on average 50,000 acres of wheat, around 10,000 is cut for grain with an average of 30 bu. Acre: the rest is graze out.
  • Stephens County harvests 37,000 acre of grass hay averaging  2 ton per acre.
  • There are 4500-5000 acres in alfalfa with an average of 4.5-5 tons per acre
  • The county averages 31,000 beef cows and during the winter total beef numbers will increase to 70,000-80,000 with stocker cattle.
  • Total production from agriculture is $33,984,000 and livestock sales accounted for 30,695,000 of the total amount.
